On October 12, Harris & Associates proudly attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly-completed Holman Highway Roundabout/SR1 & SR68 Ramps Project in Monterey, California.
The ceremony was very well-attended by representatives from all levels of state and local governments to celebrate the successful completion of the project which began in August of 2016. Several attendees and speakers noted that despite initial skepticism, the successful delivery of this project has brought confidence to the efficacy and benefits of similar roundabouts for the future. This is good news, remarked Executive Director Debbie Hale of the Transportation Agency for Monterey County, noting plans for an additional six roundabouts on Highway 68 are planned between Monterey and Salinas.
This roundabout is the first highway-to-highway roundabout in Monterey County and was built to relieve congestion near the Highway 68/Highway 1 intersection and improve access to Pacific Grove, Monterey, Pebble Beach, and nearby emergency facilities. Vice President Tim Nylen from the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, noted how the project has significantly improved access to the hospital's facilities. Several speakers also noted how successful the public-private partnership was on this $10 million public-private partnership between the City of Monterey, City of Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach Company, the Monterey Bay Unified Air Pollution Control District, the County of Monterey, Caltrans, and the Transportation Agency for Monterey County.
Harris & Associates was acknowledged for going above and beyond its role as construction manager for taking an extraordinarily active role in engaging the local community to both ease and address public concerns during construction.
