Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center (ARTIC) - Phase I Initial Transit Center Facility

With such popular destinations as Disneyland and Angels Stadium, Anaheim hosts millions of tourists, residents and commuters every year. But traffic, congestion and carbon impact were taking a toll.

Today, there's ARTIC: the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center. This iconic new California landmark unites 10 disparate modes of transport–everything from commuter rail to bicycle. It helps people get where they want to go, while saving time and the environment.

As part of the ARTIC team, Harris & Associates helped to provide:

• Management and oversight of design and preconstruction planning activities
• Compliance with all funding terms and conditions
• Coordination with public and private stakeholders
• Environmental review
• Constructability review
• Cost estimating
• Value engineering services

Harris & Associates was also responsible for bid package preparation and on-site management and oversight of ARTIC's construction.

Core Elements

The $187 million phase of the program, built on a 16-acre site owned by the Orange County Transportation Authority and the city of Anaheim, included construction of:

• A 13,000-square-foot Amtrak terminal building
• Thirty-thousand square feet of civic space for passenger and community use
• Twenty-three thousand square feet of retail space
• Over 1,000 parking spaces, including charging stations for electric vehicles

With its innovative, open-space design, contemporary restaurants and shops, and central location, ARTIC is the culmination of a project first envisioned in 1992.

Beyond the Blueprints

ARTIC is a LEED Platinum masterpiece. Its share of recycled steel, its Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood, and its diversion of more than 95 percent of construction waste away from landfills testify to ARTIC's forward-looking construction.

Yet ARTIC's energy and water efficiency are even more impressive. Photovoltaic arrays atop its parking structures provide 18.5% of the energy it consumes. Its high-performance ETFE roofing membrane is big enough to cover 4.5 football fields. Rainwater from its roof areas is collected onsite and routed through sand for treatment and filtration. Even the pavers surrounding the terminal are pervious, reducing runoff into storm drains.
